Our Story

Basil & Alred is a professional services firm offering assurance, tax and advisory services. It is located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The team at Basil & Alred is led by Partners with experience in insurance, banking, communication, mining, oil and gas, manufacturing, agriculture, trading and transportation. Managing Partner and CEO

Godfrey Mramba is the Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer of

Basil & Alred, a medium size professional services firm offering assurance, tax and advisory services.  Prior to founding Basil & Alred, Godfrey was the Managing Director and Vice President of Coeur Tanzania Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Coeur d’Alene Mines Corporation (Coeur), the largest U.S.-based primary silver producer.

Godfrey’s experience extends over 25 years both in the United States and in Tanzania; seven of those years as Managing Director and Board Member of Coeur Tanzania. While at the headquarters in the U.S., his duties included being in-charge of Project Accounting for Coeur’s world class San Bartlome silver mine during its mine development. He also spearheaded efforts for the establishment of Coeur Tanzania and later transferred to Tanzania to take charge of the Tanzanian subsidiary.

Before joining Coeur, Mr. Mramba worked as an Auditor with Ernst &Young in Seattle, Washington.  At Ernst & Young, Godfrey’s significant clients included mutual funds, wealth management, venture capital fund and an insurance company.  He also had clients in technology, oil and manufacturing sectors.  Godfrey has experience with listed Companies including Coeur which is listed in New York and in Toronto.

Godfrey is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensed by the State of Washington, U.S.A and he is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants (WSCPA).  He is also registered as a CPA in Public Practice with the National Board of Accountants and Auditors of Tanzania (NBAA) and is certified by the Tanzania Revenue Authority as a Registered Tax Consultant.  He is also certified by the AICPA as a Chartered Global Management Accountant.  He holds a Master of Accountancy degree from the University of Idaho in the U.S.A.

Apart from Basil & Alred, Godfrey is also the founder of Peak Media Limited, owners of Banana FM 98.7, which operates in Kilimanjaro and surrounding areas.  He is a Board Member in various companies in Tanzania including a bank, media, insurance, hotels and investments.  Godfrey is Chairman of the Board in at least two organizations and Chairman of the Audit, Risk and Compliance Committees in another two.  He is the former Chairman of the British Legion Tanganyika Club.

Brian is a Tax partner at Basil & Alred and has an experience spanning more than 20 years in offering tax compliance, advisory services and company secretarial services, and has worked in Kenya and in Tanzania. With his many years of experience, he rose to the rank of Director in one of the international ‘Big 4’ accounting firms.

He has considerable experience in VAT, Personal Income Tax, and Corporate Tax, and has provided advisory and compliance services in various sectors (financial sector telecommunication, oil and gas, shipping, insurance, agriculture, and manufacturing). He has assisted a number of multinational clients in tax-efficient re-structuring as well as due- diligence assignments. He has led clients through the process of registering their investment vehicles and filing annual returns with the Registrar of Companies.

He has particular expertise and bias in supporting clients across a wide range of sectors including; Parastatals, State Corporations, manufacturing, Banking, Financial Services, ICT, Agriculture and Agro- processing, Real Estate, Construction, Business Process Outsourcing and Public Sector. Additionally, Brian has resolved tax audit issues raised by the Revenue Authorities on behalf of his clients having built important relationships within these authorities. In applying his legal background, Brian reviews client contracts prior to execution, in order to establish any tax concerns that might arise in future. This way, he has been involved in advising clients to amend the terms of contracting, to protect the parties’ interests.

Brian has been a lead advisor in various client engagements involving financial modelling, application for waivers and remission for VAT and Customs Duty, tax health checks aimed at identifying the tax compliance gaps, conducting applications for capital allowances and obtaining approvals from the revenue authority.

He has skills and experience in reviewing client operations and identifying regulatory changes required to enable entities to compete at international markets, conducting comparative analysis of the regulatory framework in East Africa and formulating best practices to be adopted.
